about

A Scottish song written about a notable Aberdeenshire whaling ship in the 1820s. After sailing for just a few years The Diamond, along with a fleet of other ships, was crushed by pack ice off the coast of Greenland. In some ways, songs about whaling may seem anachronistic to modern audiences (and we certainly don’t support it), but it was an undeniably significant part of life for many communities and individuals on the northwest coasts of Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.

lyrics

The Diamond is a ship, me lads
For the Davis Strait she’s bound
The quay it is all garnished
With bonny lasses 'round
Captain Thompson gives the order
To sail the ocean wide
Where the sun it never sets, me lads
Nor darkness dims the sky

And it's cheer up me lads
Let your hearts never fail
For the bonny ship the Diamond
Goes a-fishing for the whale

Along the quay at Peterhead
The lasses stand around
With their shawls all pulled around them
And their salt tears running down
Don't you weep, my bonny lass
Though you’ll be left behind
For the rose will bloom on Greenland's ice
Before we change our minds

It will be bright both day and night
When the Greenland lads come home
With a ship that’s full of oil, me boys
And money to our names
We'll make the cradles for to rock
And the blankets for to tear
And every lass in Peterhead sings
"Hushabye, my dear"
